Request for Nominations for Internal Wells Scholars Program

Posted: March 5, 2012 by IUsec in Announcements, Fellowships, Scholarships

The Wells Scholars Program invites Indiana University Bloomington faculty to nominate outstanding students for an Internal Wells Scholarship.  The Wells Scholarship provides full tuition and academic fees, a living stipend, and the possibility of up to an academic year of support for overseas study.  Any sophomore or junior pursuing an undergraduate degree on the Bloomington campus is eligible, provided he or she has completed at least three semesters of course work as a full-time student in residence at IU Bloomington at the time of nomination.  (Please note: the Wells Scholarship cannot be used for support beyond the fourth year of undergraduate study).

The scholarship is based on merit, without regard to financial need.

A nominee is normally expected to be among the top 1% of students at the university in terms of intellectual ability and scholarly performance.  The selection committee will also look for evidence of exceptional additional accomplishments or qualities as indicated by extracurricular activities, community service, research, and/or outstanding talent in some specific field.

To be considered for an Internal Wells award, a student must be nominated by a member of the IU Bloomington faculty, whose detailed letter of nomination and support must reach the program by Friday, March 23, 2012.  Students may not apply for consideration.  In the past, some nominations have been seconded by letters from additional faculty members; and thus, the principal nominator might solicit supporting letters from one or more colleagues.  The letter or letters should speak about the nominee’s qualities of character and leadership, as well as about the nominee’s academic and extracurricular achievements.  All letters should reach the program by March 23.

From the initial pool of nominees, the program will select a number from whom resumes and personal statements will be requested, and from that smaller number we will invite finalists for interviews on Friday, May 4.  We expect to announce the results soon after the interviews and anticipate making one award.

Please send letters of nomination to be received by March 23 to:
